Mt. Kilimanjaro

Mt. Kilimanjaro to me is a very special place and having successfully summitted the highest peak in Africa makes it even more special. I have written several articles about Kili and each time time I read them or anyone elses blogs, stories, pictures, etc. it evokes a sense of pride and brings back great and successful memories. The picture above is my favorite picture of Kili itself. It was taken early in the morning from freezing cold Karanga Camp about 24 hours from the summit along the Machame Route. Africa is my favorite continent and Kili may be my favorite place on the dark continent. For the rest of my life my friend Jake (pictured to the left below) and I can say that we summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro. To read my day to day accounting of our climb, click here. In addition to see our slide show on youtube click here. Finally, I booked my whole East Africa trip with my man Donovan at Bootsnall Adventure Travel. He also runs a great Kili site that I check everyday.

Lee - enjoyed reading about your trek up Kilimanjaro. Very enjoyable and informative. I’ll be taking a solo trip next year to climb it and to also see the Serengeti. For now, just climbing Half Dome and training for my first marathon. Cheers!

Lee (and Jake),
Very much enjoyed your travelogue although I found myself wondering many times why would you want to torture yourselves like that? But then again, my idea of a vacation is sitting on the fantail of a cruise ship with a frozen drink in hand. Kudos to you both for accomplishing this goal. Awesome pictures too, you guys are the MAN!

Thanks Maureen, it was a great journey and we still talk about it almost daily. The torture is part of the fun and certainly the accomplishment.

Hi Lee,
I just got back from Africa, after summitting Kili on the last full moon (Aug 28). Its a life changing experience…one I thought I could do again….before summit night that is. Wow, its a toughie, isn’t it?
I’ve bee enthralled reading other people’s journals…and if you’re interested, here’s a link to my ’summit night journal’.

BTW, I have the same pic from Karaga Camp…
Good luck with all your adventures,
Kind Regards
