Driving in Africa is always an adventure. You never know what you are going to run into. Whether its drunk drivers, crazy minibuses or animals hogging the street, you are always in for something memorable. This was the case for Mike and I as we drove through the lovely country of Lesotho. The unusual part is what we encountered on the highway.

Djibouti, Djibouti

February 7th, 2008 | Username By Lee | Comments 3 Comments »

It’s really fun to say Djibouti. I keep finding myself just saying the word over and over-you should try it, it’s kind of fun. It’s also spelled neatly and one of those places, kind of like Timbuktu, that you’ve always heard of and never really knew exactly where it was or that people actually went or lived there. But alas, I have discovered that there are a lot of people here: the local Djiboutians who are extremely hospitable and very nice, many French expats and businessman, a ton of smugglers moving goods into and out of Africa and into the Middle East and Europe and a huge US military presence. There is a huge base here strategically located where the Middle East meets Africa-not to mention Somaliland is about 20 miles away from where I am right now. But Djibouti has a lot of character and charm on its own merit and is quite surprisingly to me-really, really nice.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

February 6th, 2008 | Username By Lee | Comments 1 Comment »

I spent the first half of today in Addis Ababa, which is the pleasant capital of Ethiopia and a major travel hub for Eastern Africa. This was my fifth trip to the dark continent and third in the last 16 months. I spent my time touring around the city with my Ethiopian tour guide in his ramshackle black and yellow taxi that is very commonplace to see in Africa. I think the cab topped out at 25mph…maybe. The good news was it only stalled twice and the friendly Ethiopian guys in the street were always happy to lend a hand in pushing the car to help get it started again.

Climbing Table Mountain

Table Mountain looms over Cape Town, South Africa like a mother elephant looms over her young in the African wild to protect and watch over them. It is a truly awe-inspiring sight that can be seen from anywhere in Cape Town like a beacon guiding you home. It is a large and impressive, perfectly placed tabletop mountain directly in the center of the city which thrives below it. At night, it is lit up for all to see. The night and the light lend a mysterious, Gotham quality to its already awesome plateau-like appearance. Although it is just a big rock above a beautiful oceanside city, it is impossible to take your eyes off its majesty.

The Sands of Time

The Sahara Desert occupies the vast majority of North Africa stretching from the Red Sea and Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Sahara, “The Great Desert”, is the world’s largest hot desert, and second largest desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 square kilometers, it is almost as large as the United States, and is larger than Australia. I had previously seen the Desert in Egypt but my recent trip to Merzouga in Eastern Morocco showed me a Sahara of mythical proportions.

Robben Island

Robben Island is located about 12 kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa and is reached by ferry from the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Since 1997, it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Cape Town and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. But for nearly 400 years, Robben Island was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society. It was here that Nelson Mandela spent 27 years languishing in prison as a political prisoner during Aparteid.

Death in Maputo, Mozambique

November 20th, 2007 | Username By Lee | Comments 5 Comments »

We arrived in Maputo, Mozambique with no expectations. We decided to visit Mozambique on a whim because Mike and I were in nearby Nelspruit, South Africa after a four-day safari in Kruger Park. It was so close that we couldn’t pass up the opportunity which would turn into something we’d never forget.

As many of you know, I am very interested in the situation in Darfur and have given to the charity at savedarfur.org in the past and closely monitor what happens over there. I just felt that I wanted to bring it to light on my site and give everyone some background information on it because it’s a problem that isn’t going away and I also feel that most people don’t even understand whats actually happening over there. Here is a great piece on the background of the situation in Darfur from their website. I hope you all will take the time to read it because it’s important.
