Ever hear of a place called Roatan? Of course not, who has? What country is that in? The answer is…it’s a small island in the western Caribbean belonging to Honduras. The island of Roatan is home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the entire world. It is contained in the second largest coral reef in the world behind Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Along with its neighboring island of Utila, they make up the Bay Islands of Honduras.

Traveling Through Central America

Central America is a great place to travel through. There is a ton to see and do in the seven countries that are in limbo as to which continent they belong to. If you want to visit all seven countries, you need to do some serious planning. You need to know what areas of the country you want to visit and which coast that area is on. Many Central American countries have a Pacific and Caribbean coast. Also, you need to plan which border crossing you will utilize to make the most direct route to your next destination. Finally, you need to figure out where to fly in and out of and what modes of transport you will use in between.

If you ask most people where they would go if they could go anywhere in Central America they would probably say Costa Rica or Belize. Both are wonderful places and a lot of fun to visit; as are Panama and the islands of Honduras. Very few people would mention Guatemala. In my opinion that’s a shame. Guatemala has a lot to offer and is one of the most interesting and diverse countries I have visited. I recently returned for the second time and was able to see Lake Atitlan; a stunning body of water.

White Water Rafting in Costa Rica

I love white water rafting. It really is a great way to spend an afternoon or even a few days. The very first time I went rafting was in Costa Rica several years ago on the Pacuare River. The Pacuare River is known to be one of the top five rafting rivers in the world for its scenery and rapids. This quintessential tropical river is a trip of pure magic, unsurpassed beauty, wildlife and exhilarating rapids. Located on Costa Rica’s Atlantic slope, the Pacuare River borders the Talamanca mountain range, home to native Cabecar Indians, jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloths, and an incredible variety of birds, butterflies and reptiles. It really is a great trip.

Tikal, Guatemala

If you have listened to my rants on the radio or on some of my new 7 wonders postings, then you’ll know that I disagreed with the selection of Chichen Itza as a new wonder of the world. The main reason for that is because I think Tikal in Guatemala is a better example of the great Mayan Empire and the ruins are much better to see in person and the best part is, you can climb on them!

Costa Rica

Central America is a different kind of place. It is a little bit off the normal tourist route and not terribly accommodating for backpackers as far as hostels go, although there are numerous cheap hotels. Each country in Central America is unique. Costa Rica is the current hot one in this region. It is fantastic. There are many big tourist hotels and resorts that have sprung up in the past few years. But a country cannot escape what it really is just because some fancy resorts move in. I feel sorry for people who stay only in those resorts because they do not get to experience the real Costa Rica. It is because of the real Costa Rica that I keep going back.

Pura Vida en Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the new hotspot for Americans to go and experience nature at it’s best. Normally that would be a red flag for me to stay away but I can’t…Costa Rica is awesome. There is so much to do in a country that isn’t that big. Get to San Jose and rent a car and drive around the country. There are a million different things to do, something to suit everyone. In the center of Costa Rica are the Tabacon Natural Hot Springs (above) which are stunning and a lot of fun. It’s a great place to chill out and relax. The springs are all different temperatures, something to fit everyones specifications and there is a pool with swim up bar of course. The scenery is great and the best thing is that they are located at the base of Arenal Volcano which lights up the evening sky every night. It really is awesome, I wish my pictures came out better to show it off. From the hot springs head to the beach and chill out with the surfers and the locals and enjoy a beautiful sunset with an Imperial beer in hand. Click here for more on Costa Rica.
