Istanbul is a pretty wild city. It is a maze of streets with seemingly unending traffic madness and navigational mayhem. It is the only city in the world that is on two continents, it spans both Asia and Europe. It also has some of the best food in the world and a lot to see. There are tons of tourist attractions from the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace to the beautiful and world famous Hagia Sofia-which was a finalist for the new seven wonders of the world vote that was held in July.

The Parthenon is a temple of the Greek goddess Athena built in the 5th century BC on the Acropolis of Athens. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered one of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy, and is one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments and is the posterchild for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

New 7 Wonders Announcement is Saturday

Again, here are my final 7 that I think should win. Since the Pyramids are automatically going to carry over as a wonder, here are my 7 that I think should win. Again, I have been to 18 of the 21 finalists. The 3 I haven’t been to are Timbuktu, Neuschwanstein Castle, and the Great Wall of China.

Easter Island
Petra
Taj Mahal
Machu Picchu
Angkor Wat
Acropolis
Colosseum

Keep in mind, apparently they have been stuffing the ballots, so to speak, in Asia and Latin America so that may allow Chichen Itza, Christ the Redeemer or the Great Wall to sneak in. Lets see how it goes.

New Seven Wonders Voting Update

June 8th, 2007 | Username By Lee | Comments 10 Comments »

According to this article posted by Reuters, the Acropolis and Chichen Itza are the two leading vote getters thus far. I am shocked that this is the case. It also mentions the rest of the top ten in no particular order so they don’t skew the voters. I cannot believe that Chichen Itza is one of the top 2 vote getters. In my opinion, Chichen Itza is not even as amazing as Tikal which isn’t even in the final 20 wonders candidates. I believe this to be a lack of information by a lot of voters or some type of vote stuffing if you will.

Man fears Time, yet Time fears the Pyramids - Ancient Arab Proverb

The amazing Pyramids of Egypt, among the largest constructions ever built, constitute one of the most potent and enduring symbols of the mysterious Ancient Egyptian civilization. They are the only surviving member of the original and ancient seven wonders of the world. It is generally accepted by most archaeologists that they were constructed as burial monuments associated with royal solar and stellar cults, and most were built during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. Basically, what this means to everyone reading this is that the Pyramids are really cool and they will make you feel miniscule in the grand scheme of the history of the world.

Machu Picchu is one of those places that just completely baffles you. It is hard to comprehend how this city came to be and even moreso: how it came be be lost. The “Lost City of the Incas” is so mysterious that if you choose to do the 4 day Inca Trail hike to get there, you will spend most of your time trying to figure out just how they got all of these rocks and stuff up the massive Andes Mountains. You can ask your guide but they can’t give you a definitive answer. Machu Picchu is another example of what a new wonder of the world should be. It is mysterious, tough to reach, beautiful and captivating. In a word Machu Picchu is awesome.
