Christ the Redeemer

Yesterday I did a profile on one of the new seven wonders finalists that I feel should certainly be voted in. Today I am going to write about a finalist which I feel just barely misses the final cut to seven. The statue of Christ the Redeemer, looming over Rio de Janeiro like a father to the entire city is an amzing thing to see because it’s viewable from throughout the city. Basically anywhere you are in Rio, you can look up and see Christ looking down upon you and watching over you.

New 7 Wonders Profile-Petra, Jordan

The new seven wonders campaign is quite simply about places like Petra. Petra is the epitome of what a wonder of the world is and should be. It is mysterious and awesome. It strikes your nerves and awakens your curiosty. It is the coolest buildup of any wonder on the list. You have to walk for nearly a half hour to get to see the main structures and there is no peeking like at most wonders. You can’t see it until you do and then you can’t take your eyes off of it. Petra is truly amazing and along with the Pyramids, my favorite of the new wonder finalists. The following is an excerpt from a story I wrote a few years ago that has been published around the world and will appear in geography textbooks in Canada this fall.

New 7 Wonders Profile-Easter Island, Chile

Easter Island is quite simply my favorite place on Earth that I have been so far. It has everything to offer a visitor including perhaps the most interesting and exciting of what I think should be the new seven wonders of the world. The world famous Moai of Easter Island are both mysterious and amazing to see in person. You cannot help but feel bedazzled by the site of the Moai. You can’t help also feeling like you are caught in a time warp. Easter Island is in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, 3000 miles from anywhere resembling solid land and you will never want to go back once you have experienced this wonderous island.

New 7 Wonders Profile-Angkor Wat, Cambodia
This is my first in a series of my 7 profiles on what I believe should be the new seven wonders of the world. As you may recall, I published a short list with some explanation of why I believe certain places should be wonders of the world when the final vote is announced in Lisbon this summer. In this entry, I will focus on one special place, Angkor Wat.

New Seven Wonders

I am a big history guy and I love the ancient seven wonders of the world. I have studied up on all of them and have visited the only remaining one, the pyramids. Now, the new seven wonders of the world campaign is seeking votes from millions of people all over the world to choose the new seven wonders of the world. I have voted several times already and have visited all but three of the twenty finalists. I have very strong feelings on this vote and what should qualify to be a wonder of the world. I believe that of the twenty finalists, only 11 are worthy of being finalists (You can see pictures of the 20 finalists here). I don’t believe that modern sites such as the Sydney Opera House or the Eiffel Tower should be considered. Nor do I feel that several of the others are worthy of their finalist status. I understand they want to have a variety covering all parts of the globe but the Statue of Liberty is not a wonder of the world. It is a great site but it doesn’t inspire wonder in people. I have voted for the same 7 each time I have voted. I have 6 that I think should definitely be wonders and 1 that came down to a few toss up points before I chose it.
In the coming weeks I will profile all of my choices and why I voted for them, but the 7 that I voted for are: The Pyramids; Petra; Taj Mahal; Angkor Wat; Easter Island (Moai on Anakena Beach, Easter Island pictured above); Machu Picchu and The Acropolis. (more…)
