A Weekend in Oregon

‘Keep Portland Weird’ is written in huge letters on the back of a building across from the famous Voodoo Donuts on Third Street in Portland and few sayings can sum up Portland quite so well. It is a weird place, that’s for sure. However, it is also one of the best cities in the United States and I was as surprised by being there as you may be reading this article. Portland has so much to offer in terms of restaurants, bars, good walking, parks, nice people and mainly just people watching. Portland is a city of transients, runaways and just plain weirdoes or yahoos as I like to say. But obviously that’s not all, it has very normal people as well but the yahoos are much more fun to watch and talk about! The main thing I will be left with from Portland is that it is a gorgeous city with a great edgy vibe. You see all types of people. It’s like San Francisco meets Seattle but more laid back and much cheaper. I had an absolute blast in the most underrated city in America.

A Classic Road Trip in Arizona

There are few things I love more than a good road trip. Anywhere in the world, I would almost always prefer to drive if it’s reasonable because you get to see so much more, so much closer up. In the United States, there are few better places to take road trips than the Southwest. The huge open spaces, otherworldly landscapes, national parks and strange sights make for a really interesting trip while following in the shadows of the old Route 66.

Soccer in Mexico

Soccer or Futbol in Mexico is a religion. Much like the rest of Latin America and in fact the world it is always the main topic of conversation and a true source of contention and passion. I have been fortunate to have been to manhy different soccer stadiums around the world and have seen many different matches. I recently went to a match at Tecnologico, which is the stadium for the Monterrey Soccer Club. It didn’t disappoint and we saw the home team win 3-0 as we sat in the front row and had a great view of the game. But the game in Latin America takes a back seat to the fans, their songs and certainly their celebrations when their team scores a goal.

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is an enormous archaeological site in the Basin of Mexico, located about 40 kilometers north of Mexico City, containing some of the largest pyramidal structures built in the pre-Columbian Americas. Apart from the pyramidal structures, the archaeological site of Teotihuacan is also known for its large residential complexes, the “street of the dead” where they used to sacrifice people, and its colorful, well-preserved murals. You can stroll around the grounds and still actually ascend the steep climb to the top of the pyramids where the panoramic views are spectacular over the whole site and of the surrounding countryside. Teotihuacan is quite a nice escape from the gridlock of Mexico City.

Eating in Monterrey, Mexico

So I’ve been here in Monterrey, Mexico for 4 days now and I have eaten tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. It hasn’t just been tacos; it has been gorditas and various types of taco like combinations but all of which can be classified as some type of taco. And they are all amazing. I love Mexican food, second only to Italian food and the culinary delights here in Monterrey do not disappoint. I am living in the center of town right next to Monterrey Institute of Technology, one of the top schools in Latin America and a very nice part of town. There happen to be several taco places within a three minute radius of my apartment and that is good and bad. Good because I love tacos and bad because then I eat them constantly. Quite the dichotomy, but I suppose it could be worse!

Alaska-The Last Frontier

I arrived in Alaska Tuesday with my friend Mike to explore the Last Frontier, at least thats what Alaskan license plates say, and to see its extraordinary natural beauty. However, I have found out that it is much more the last frontier-it’s one of the most interesting and backwards places I have ever been and what a time it has been so far. I have certainly encountered some of the most “different” people I have ever met.

The Ultimate College Town

Big State Universities in the United States are kind of an institution. Many are located in little podunk towns and basically make the town’s population and certainly its notoriety such as College Park, Maryland where I went to school. However, this past weekend I was in Gainesville, Florida which is home to the the University of Florida, which was recently voted the number one party school in America and most likely has the best big time athletic program in the country. In my book that’s a pretty good combo and wouldn’t be a bad place to spend four years.

Sex and the City “Hotspots” Tour

I am the first to admit that I have never really watched ‘Sex and the City’ and am hardly a fan at all. However, I do happen to live in Manhattan’s West Village where a lot of the shows scenes took place or at least where they were filmed. For months now, I have walked through the West Village and noticed these ‘Sex and the City’ tours walking through the tree lined streets. The tours are impossible to miss because they are made up of dozens and I mean dozens of women. These women are generally dressed up as if they are going out for a night on the town in the middle of the day in their high heeled stilettos and trendy dresses. However, with the shows success and the recent release of the movie these tours have become increasingly popular. Shocking to me, but a brilliant idea nonetheless.

Bay To Breakers

I spent the past weekend in San Francisco visiting friends and I was told there something called Bay To Breakers. It was supposed to have kind of a cult following and was something I should not miss as it kind of sums up San Francisco in a nutshell. My friends were right about that and Bay To Breakers could certainly only take place in San Francisco. I have been to San Fran several times but this was probably the most memorable.

The Valley of the Sun

I spent a few days in the Phoenix area this past weekend. I have to say that I really like Phoenix. To sum it up, on the shuttle from the airport to the rental car area, the driver gets on the speaker and gives his weather forecast. He says, “It’s gonna be hot. It’s gonna be sunny. And it’s gonna be beautiful. Welcome to Arizona.” Needless to say, everyone cheered. It was pretty funny. But he was right, it’s always perfect out there.
