The Sad State of American Politics

Sitting on my couch last night flicking around the TV, I couldn’t help but stop on CNN to watch Hillary Clinton’s speech last night after Barack Obama clinched the nomination. I follow politics very closely, both abroad and at home, and in full disclosure-I actually attended a Hillary fundraiser last year in New York. For the record, it wasn’t because I really support her but moreso because I wanted to see what political fundraisers were like. Lets put it this way, I will never be attending another one and last night I was reminded why.

Royal Geographical Society

I am very proud to write that I have been approved and elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London, UK. The Royal Geographical Society is the leading world center for geographical learning - supporting education, teaching, research and scientific expeditions, as well as promoting public understanding and enjoyment of geography. It is also a member of the Science Council. The society has merged with the Institute of British Geographers and is properly known as the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers).

Fuerzabruta

I am not much for shows, Broadway or not, but recently I checked out the Argentinian show Fuerzabruta from the creators of the previous hit De La Guarda. It was awesome. It was actually perfect. It was only an hour long. It was really fun, cool and there was no talking. You and the rest of the audience stand the whole time and are in awe as the acrobatic actors fly around or slip and slide above you. There was no break, fun-upbeat music and really good acting. It was really enjoyable and it was a real party atmosphere.

Random Stuff…

I am exhausted today and can’t really think of anything good travel related to write about so I thought I would share a bunch of things on my mind, some funny, some serious and some having nothing to do with anything.

The Endless Summer

I’ve been feeling sick lately and this freezing cold weather in New York is starting to become a real bummer so I decided to watch one of my favorite movies of all time last night, The Endless Summer. It’s one of those movies that every time you see it, it just makes you relax and takes you away to the places where the two main characters are in the movie. The movie is timeless and so brilliantly simple. If you had the time and the money, you could follow the summer around the world wherever it goes, making it endless.

The Democratic Political Process?

I usually don’t write about politics and I am not going to try to push my political views upon anyone here but I am just so baffled, confused and annoyed about this years Democratic political primary process that my head is spinning and it seems to me that nobody has any clue what’s happening either. So how many of you out there had heard of “Superdelegates” before this years primary season? Nobody. How many of you outside possibly those of you in Texas, knew that Texas had both a primary and a caucus to decide who receives their delegates? Nobody. How many of you knew that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) had the power to strip two large and election changing states, Florida and Michigan, of their delegates because they scheduled their primaries too early-thus rendering their voters’ votes useless? Nobody. Finally, how many of you are sick and tired of this election that has been seemingly going on for two years already and has no end in sight-at least before the Convention? Everybody!

My Oscar Roundup

I thought this years Oscars lacked a lot of nominee firepower of other years. I felt like the nominees this year were weaker than normal with much fewer good films and good performances to choose from. However, I felt that two performances were incredibly memorable and one movie really stood out. The two performances were Daniel Day-Lewis in ‘There Will Be Blood’ who won for best actor and Javier Bardem in ‘No Country For Old Men’ who won for best supporting actor. I also felt that ‘No Country For Old Men’ was clearly the best picture of the year, even with the questionable ending much like last years winner ‘The Departed’. I felt that the other nominees for best picture and best actor were not even in the same league as the winners. My only question was why Bardem was nominated for supporting actor when it seemed to me that he was basically the main character in ‘No Country For Old Men’. However, I guess it’s appropriate that both he and Day-Lewis got Oscars because they were equally deserving.

Reflecting on Past Trips

A lot of times when we are stressed out we just focus on what we are stressed out about and in fact make it worse. We are all guilty of this as it is human nature. However, I have a lot going on right now in my life and have been really stressed the past few days. Last night, I was having a lot of trouble sleeping and I just couldn’t relax or get certain things out of my head. Instead of freaking out and thinking about how tired I was going to be the next day, I started reflecting on past places I’ve visited, things I’ve done and people I’ve met along the way. It’s funny how relaxing that can be and in no time I was ready to fall asleep.

Losing Your Cell Phone

Do you remember what it was like before cell phones, texting, camera, emails and the Internet right in the palm of your hand. I certainly don’t or at least I certainly don’t miss the days of using pay phones or calling your answering machine to check messages while you were out, etc. However, last night I somehow lost my cell phone. It’s amazing what an annoying mini crisis that can turn into because you can’t get in touch with anybody and nobody can get in touch with you.
