5 Great Greenwich Village Bars

If you’ve ever lived in or spent any amount of time in New York City then you’ve undoubtedly become well acquainted with some of your local watering holes. There are more bars in New York City than any other city in the United States and most of them are pretty good. Some are more locals, some more tourists, some college-ish, some suits, some pick up joints, some dives but almost all have some character; especially downtown. If you live in Greenwich Village as I do, then you become territorial about what bars (and restaurants) you go to. It takes a lot to get a new one into your rotation. In New York, if you live downtown you almost judge people by what bars they like and where they like to eat. So tread lightly and while I love many local spots, here are 5 of my favorites in the Village.

11 Cheap Eats Under $20 in NYC

Finding good value for food in New York City is not easy. You can always grab a slice, a sandwich or a salad at pretty much any of the new $1 pizza places, bodegas or delis along the streets but you are not necessarily getting good food or value. So after 11.5 years of living in Manhattan, I have a few recommendations. I think I know what I’m talking about since I eat out every single meal. It is cheaper than cooking if you know what you’re doing and certainly in my case; it’s better! Here are my top 11 cheap eats under $20 in New York City.

Washington DC is one of my favorite cities in the United States. I went to college right outside the District at Maryland and essentially grew up going to DC a lot. One of my favorite places to go out to and eat at is PS 7 Restaurant. PS 7 is a chic and cool restaurant/lounge right in the Gallery Place/Chinatown neighborhood of DC, just a block or two away from the Verizon Center in a newer, cool part of town. I highly recommend you stop by and sample the delicious appetizers and great drinks to get your night started next time you’re in DC.

Joe’s Pizza NYC

Joe’s Pizza is simply the quintessential New York slice. That pretty much sums it up accurately. It is fast, easy and fantastic. There are no frills at Joe’s. It’s just a walk up place for slices with a few pictures on the wall of some celebrities that have eaten there. The same three guys work there pretty much 24/7. I have literally been going there since before I even moved to Manhattan 11 years ago. I estimate that, including last night…carry the 1…I have probably been to Joe’s 2000 times and I am not exaggerating. Here’s why.

Yama Sushi NYC

Aside from all Italian food but especially pizza, sushi is probably my second favorite food. In New York City there are all types of fancy places that are really expensive and you don’t even get that much unless you spend a fortune. I know places that charge upwards of $20 for a simple roll or should I say a specialty roll. You know one of those fancy rolls that are 3-4 times the price of a regular spicy tuna roll or something. That drives me nuts. However, there is one place I know that you get a ton of fish in each piece and the price is pretty average if not very reasonable. This place is Yama Sushi and it is my favorite sushi place in New York City.

Peasant NYC

So I’ve decided to add a new feature to my site. Since travel, sports, current events and food are some of my biggest passions and I write about the other three, I have decided to start doing restaurant reviews in more detail than just mere mention in my posts…so to speak. I travel all over but live in New York; so many of the restaurants I will talk about will be in New York but whenever I go other cities I will write about some of them as well. Obviously, I have a big back log of restaurants all over the US to talk about but will try and focus on places that are fresh in my mind. So my first restaurant review will be where I ate last night, Peasant. A chic, yet unassuming, perfectly decorated Tuscan hotspot in a cool NYC neighborhood called Nolita.
