Rafa Rules Roland Garros

Rafael Nadal proved once and for all yesterday that he no equal and really no challengers to his dominance on clay as he thoroughly dismantled the best player in the world, Roger Federer, in three sets at 1, 3 and love. It wasn’t even close. I have seen nearly every match the two have played and never have I seen one completely destroy the other the way Nadal did yesterday to punctuate his amazing clay court season. Federer’s only reprieve is that the clay season is now over and he can set his sights on a 6th straight Wimbledon title and cementing his number one ranking.

The Stanley Cup Finals

It’s very rare that you will see me write about hockey on this site or even talk much about it in general. There aren’t many fans around but last nights triple overtime game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals had to be the best game I’ve ever seen. I’ll be honest, I didn’t start watching until midway through the third period when the Detroit Red Wings were winning 3-2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thats when it got good.

After a long and grueling campaign, the Champions League final-the most watched sports event of the year, is an all English affair for the very first time. Chelsea and Manchester United, the Red Sox and Yankees of English football, battle in Moscow at Luzhniki Stadium in a game that will be watched by more than a billion people.

All English Final

After two great semifinals we are left with Chelsea and Manchester United in the Champions League final which will take place May 21st in Moscow. They beat Liverpool and Barcelona respectively. This will be the first time there has ever been an all English final and I am sure that more than a few pints were drunken in the past few nights in the UK.

Two Draws After First Leg Semis

April 24th, 2008 | Username By Lee | Comments 4 Comments »

After two Champions League semifinal first leg matches between four of Europes biggest clubs, we have two draws. Tuesday at Anfield, Liverpool jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Dirk Kuyt’s goal just before halftime only to give it away in injury time with a brutal own goal by John Arne Riise. That allowed Chelsea to salvage a draw with a crucial away goal to give them the advantage heading back to Stamford Bridge. Last night Barcelona controlled the ball for two thirds of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net. Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo, the frontrunner for world player of the year (and my least favorite player on Earth) missed a chip shot penalty kick for Manchester United and the game ended in a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp. Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed that Manchester United will be more aggressive next week when the second tie is held back at Old Trafford.

It is rumored that the former two time world player of the year for FC Barcelona and Brazil, Ronaldinho, could be leaving the Catalans for AC Milan. Inter Milan also seems to think they have a shot at signing the ailing, aging and struggling superstar, but Ronaldinho’s brother and agent says that AC Milan has the upper hand in signing him at year end.

Champions League Quarters

Today begins the Champions League Quarterfinals Second Leg with my favorite team Arsenal heading up to Anfield to face Liverpool for the third time in 6 days. The first two matches at the Emirates in North London ended in draws and Arsenal needs at least one away goal tonight to give them a chance to advance. Liverpool will start with that advantage tonight amid turmoil of the forthcoming departure of England striker Peter Crouch and the unknown status of the teams sale to a Dubai based group. Arsenal will have to capitalize on their opportunities because they have been thoroughly outplaying Liverpool the past two matches but have been having trouble finding the back of the net. Cesc Fabregas claims he is staying with Arsenal and that the Gunners can be the best team in Europe-it’s time for him to step up and score some big goals.

US Sports Are Back-Finally!

After a hiatus since the Superbowl, there will actually be sports to watch on television this week with the unofficial start of the 2008 sports season as March Madness and the NCAA college basketball tournament begins. February was the worst month for sports in America with only the unwatchable NBA and the boring NHL regular season to whet our appetites. Alas, as the weather gets warmer, even though it’s below freezing this morning in New York, the sun will rise again with the beginning of another great sports year.

Champions League Update

March 5th, 2008 | Username By Lee | Comments 10 Comments »

logo-champions-league.bmp
Yesterday, the first four teams advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals with Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester United and as I predicted before the group stage-Fenerbahce all advancing on aggregate scores and in fact penalty kicks for Fenerbahce. The games yesterday were riveting and there are three more this afternoon with the final second leg between Liverpool and Inter Milan being played next week. The matches to be played later today are all tight and anything can happen. Spanish giants Real Madrid and 2004 champs Porto are looking to overcome a one goal deficit while Chelsea is tied with Olympiacos and looking for a goal at Stamford Bridge. Hopefully they won’t get it but we shall see!

2008 Australian Open

January 14th, 2008 | Username By Lee | Comments 6 Comments »

aussie-open.bmp
It’s that time of year again for my favorite major tennis tournament and the first of 2008, the Australian Open. There are a lot of great story lines coming into the grand slam of Asia and the Pacific. Can the great Roger Federer win his third straight Aussie Open and fourth in five years and inch one closer to Pete Sampras’ record of 14 grand slams? On the womens side, can Serena Williams defend her title that she so brilliantly won last year or will it be business as usual for Justine Henin? Or can a new face emerge on either side as a threat to these great champions?
