2018 Top Summer Travel Destinations

Each year Allianz Travel Insurance analyzes customers’ summer vacation plans. This is determined by trips booked between May 28 to September 3, 2018 for travel between 5-8 days in length, to determine the top summer travel destinations for Americans. Once again, the top summer travel destinations are Cancun for an International destination and Orlando is the top domestic destination for Americans in 2018.  This is consistent with recent years. However, to me the most interesting thing was that even with recent disasters, San Juan, Puerto Rico is still #8 on the list!

2018 Top Summer Travel Destinations

You can clearly see below that after Orlando you see a lot of the usual suspects.  Surprisingly, Maui dropped off the list this year as it’s one of my favorite places in the world. Plus, I note that Las Vegas drops to #3 behind New York. As my friend Dan says, “This year’s results yielded some interesting findings: New York is a newcomer to the list, revealing that travelers are not only interested in beach destinations this summer,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA.

As you can clearly see below, Cancun is a solid #1 with 8 of the top 10 International destinations being in the Caribbean region. Only 2 of my favorites, London and Paris, break into the top 10. This is pretty consistent with prior years as well. As a global traveler, I wish Americans would travel further but I fully understand why they tend to stick close to home in places that are very affordable.

As I mentioned it’s also great to see people still going to Puerto Rico and of course ignoring Mexican travel warnings. Daniel Durazo agrees, “Despite recent travel warnings and last year’s Hurricane Maria, Americans are still choosing to travel to Cancun and Puerto Rico.”

*Methodology: The data of U.S. travelers’ 2018 summer travel plans was gathered by analyzing the number of travelers that went through the online booking process of airfare and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel to generate itineraries for roundtrip flights departing from US airports during 5/28/2018 – 9/3/2018 for trips between 5-8 days in length.

  1. I haven’t been to Cancun since I went for spring break in 2004. Maybe I should return. I imagine it would be a completely different experience.

  2. good article. I wonder how people’s tastes change

  3. Need some original content on your site….4 of the last 5 posts reference Allianz. Lame.

    • I agree with you. I have a lot of content written, I just haven’t had a chance to add photos and publish it-priorities have been elsewhere. I’ll be posting more original stuff soon.

  4. I’m going to Mexico next week, this is going to be a fun experience!

  5. Very nice an article. THX for a tips for summer holiday in America

  6. Thanks for Share great information with us. I will suggest when travelling, Don’t Plan Too Much. I cringe when readers ask how many days they should spend in a particular country or city. The truth is I have no idea what you’ll enjoy or who you’ll meet. I thought I’d rocket through Nicaragua in a week or two but ended up living there for 4 months.
