The 2017 New York Times Travel Show

The New York Times Travel Show is the most prestigious travel show in the United States. It’s held annually at the Javits Center on the west side of Manhattan in New York City. I have been fortunate to speak there for the last 4 years. The crowds are always big and the attendees are always well traveled and very intelligent. I love engaging the audiences questions and having conversations throughout the weekend. This year was probably my favorite year because a few friends joined me because of my relationship with Allianz Travel Insurance.

As a global ambassador for Allianz Travel Insurance along with my friend Johnny Jet, this year they decided to bring in 4 travel bloggers from around the country for the show and a weekend full of New York centric events. I was tasked with finding some quality bloggers.

We brought in Clint Johnston from TripHackr, David Lee from Travel Blog Success, Gareth Leonard from Tourist 2 Townie and Drew Binsky from his self titled blog. Each is a great guy and I was thrilled to see them and have them in New York this past weekend.

Friday at the New York Times Travel Show is industry day where there are a lot of seminars and the show opens up in the afternoon for the public. I popped in to see some friends including my good buddy Adam Richman, tour the floor and take some photos at the Allianz Travel Insurance booth. It’s always a pleasure to see my friends from Richmond in town!

Friday night we had a big group dinner in Little Italy. A restaurant called Rubirossa on Mulberry Street was the scene and the food didn’t disappoint. The conversation was great of course, talking travel, business and whatever. A good time was had by all.

Saturday I didn’t go to the show but Sunday was my talk. This year I did a joint panel with the US Department of State and the Center for Disease Control about safety abroad. Given some current political events and the participants, the question period got pretty interesting. As usual the diplomats were diplomatic whereas I was not. But that’s what makes it fun!

The talk went well and I stayed for a solid hour afterwards talking to people, taking photos and answering travel questions. Afterwards, I headed back to the Allianz Travel Insurance booth and did some Facebook Live for their page.

All in all, The New York Times Travel Show was a great success as always. It’s always fun for me to go and see friends, meet fans and have intelligent travel discussions. I look forward to next year and of course thank my friends at Allianz Travel Insurance for bringing so many people together and getting the word out about the important of travel insurance.
