Why Travel?

People always ask me why do I like to travel so much. Just yesterday I got asked this question and I gave my usual “because” answer simply because the person just wouldn’t understand and I couldn’t be bothered with a detailed answer. If you don’t like to travel and have never really seen anything it’s hard to understand. So that got me thinking and so I put this little piece together to kind of explain things. I also added it as a permanent page on the home page. This list could go on forever and I am sure everyone has their own ideas about what could be on the list as well. Anyway, enjoy.

  2. Travel is Life says

good stuff man, just saw your site for the first time today and its sweet. Wil definitely be checking back

  3. Travel exposes you to a variety of “dirty birds”!

  4. Wow, well said. As an Aussie, I can’t believe you’re a Yank saying that. Goodonya Mate.

  5. I completely agree, I had never really travelled outside the US until last April when I went to Venice for a short weekend. Ever since I just keep looking forward to the next trip.

  6. Thanks for reminding me why I travel. After having been on the road since 16 most of the time (I’m now a LOT older!) I’ve gotten a little jaded about travel. Even though all the reasons you mentioned are probably ingrained in my hard drive, it’s worth it to read them on the page and remember.
    Thanks for the reminder.

  7. Thanks for the note Parisgirl. I have checked out your blog as well and it is very cool. It’s always nice to be reminded of how amazing traveling is–we must make sure we are never too jaded to appreciate the good stuff.

  8. I absolutely agree with you. Thank you for sharing.
In Vietnam, we have a proverb, which is one of Vietnamese folk peom proverbs, saying:
    ?i m?t ngày ?àng
    H?c m?t sàng khôn
It literally means: Getting out on the road for one day, you gain a basket of wisdom. I think it expresses exactly all of what you list above. As a Vietnamese folk poetry proverb, it consists of 2 paralel clauses sharing one rhyme which is “àng”.
    ?i (go) – H?c (learn) –> a verb
    M?t (one) – M?t (one) –> a number
Ngày (day) – Sàng (a Vietnamese flat bamboo basket to filter broken rice) –> a unit
?àng (or ???ng: road) – Khôn (wisdom) –>an object/ a notion
Vietnamese people love folk poems and poetry proverbs. Every Vietnamese child know this particular proverb of travelling.
I would like to share with you about Vietnamese opinion about going out, moving and travelling.
