Highlights of Kotor, Montenegro

I first went to Kotor, Montenegro back in 2007 with my buddies. I didn’t know much about it back then except that it was supposed to be beautiful. And beautiful it was. 10 years later on a cruise on the Azamara Quest, we stopped into Kotor for a day. It didn’t disappoint. Here are the highlights of Kotor, Montenegro.

The highlights of Kotor, Montenegro have to start with sailing into port. As you weave in and out of the fjords you pass many beautiful things. Tops on the list is Our Lady of the Rocks. This is a must see if you’re visiting Kotor. If you don’t cruise in they offer boat trips to visit.

Once you’re into port, you’re a stones throw from the old town. The entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s amongst the best in the world without question. It has a lot of cats and even calls itself Cat Town. It is full of interesting buildings, restaurants, shops and gelaterias; which are not to be missed!

You can honestly roam around the old town of Kotor for hours and be fully enthralled. Plus you can go up and walk along the walls of the old city for different views of the city below.

For me, tops on the list of highlights of Kotor, Montenegro is the hike to the fortress of St. John high above Kotor. This is where you get the money views and those priceless shots to make everybody jealous on Instagram.

The hike itself is steep and involves a lot of stairs and uneven ground. Honestly, I got up to the top in about 20 minutes with multiple photo stops along the way. I am a very strong hiker and walk fast. It should take a normal person walking regularly about 30-45 minutes depending on your fitness level. It’s approximately 1.3 miles almost straight up.

Once you’re atop the city of Kotor, your mind will be blown with the view presented to you. No matter how much you’re sweating you’ll think it’s worth it. I was pumped to take the same photo I took in 2007 in the same spot.

The weather for us in Kotor took a turn for the worst after the hike and I feel fortunate we didn’t get caught in the rain, as that would be a slippery walk down. You can also do a biking tour of Kotor. I would recommend this and I would do it if I come back again but you won’t feel you missed out if you don’t do it.

These are the highlights of Kotor, Montenegro. Be sure to make the most of your trip to a place that will exceed your expectations. It’s the best spot in Montenegro and one of the best on the Adriatic.
