This 8-day journey through Sri Lanka is a rich blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and wildlife encounters.
The adventure begins with arrival in Colombo, before heading for a short tour of the nearby coastal town – Negombo. We then head inland, through the country’s lush interior, to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. This is followed by an exhilarating climb to the summit of Sigiriya Rock Fortress for sunset, before continuing to Dambulla for the night.
Day three is dedicated to experiencing rural Sri Lanka with a visit to Habarana. Here, travellers explore villages and paddy fields by traditional cart and enjoy a home-cooked village lunch. We continue through the rainforest to the city of Kandy, with a stop at the 2,000 year-old Dambulla Cave Temple on the way, before exploring Kandy’s Temple of Tooth and enjoy an evening of traditional dance, music and food.
We then migrate south through the hills to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at a tea plantation en route. From there, an epic train ride to Ella provides stunning views of Sri Lanka’s rainforest lined mountains – named one of the most scenic in the world. In Ella, we visit the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Waterfalls, before heading south to Yala National Park – the country’s leading wildlife sanctuary. In this region we enjoy a thrilling jeep safari, in search of elephants, sloth bears, and possibly leopards (if we’re lucky).
The final stages of the trip are spent on the country’s beautiful southern coast, famous for its beaches and surf culture. We spend time in Dickwella, before continuing west to Mirissa, soaking up its clear waters, beaches, scenic view-points and fresh seafood. The area is also famous for its turtles and we have chance to visit a local turtle hatchery, which plays an important role in conservation efforts in the region.
The final day includes a stop in the town of Galle, to explore its UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort, before returning to Colombo for departure, concluding a memorable journey through Sri Lanka’s cultural treasures and natural wonders.
