Cartagena, Colombia

…l of a city on the northwest Caribbean coast of Colombia. I don’t use that term lightly and Cartagena really is fantastic. The old town is as good as it gets and I’ve been to a lot of old towns around the world, especially in South America and in Europe. It is as fun as it is beautiful. I has all the little intricacies that you would look for and it has that ‘hard to put your finger on’ intangible quality that just makes it an amazing place. It’s…

Somewhere in the World-East Timor

…workers staying in them and there only being 2 or 3 hotels-and I use that term lightly. I’m told by the friendly people back at the hotel and by Lonely Planet that there are a few nice little bars on the harbor to sit and relax at for sunset and for a few drinks at night. Hopefully that will be nice and I can find a decent place to eat around here as I am starving. The Lonely Planet also recommended this “amazing” Turkish place-we’ll see how amaz…

Palermo, Sicily

…and examining the intricacies of the man smooch. This is what we named the term for when the men will kiss each other on the cheeks between 2 and 4 times as a greeting. Obviously it is a cultural thing and I have clearly seen it before and being Italian it is common in my family but never with friends so it was just interesting to watch. I still don’t know what constitutes how many kisses are given. Why is it sometimes two and sometimes four? Is i…

7kg or Less! Packing 101

…tell you to check your bag because you are 1kg over the limit. Besides the term LOL, there are few things I hate more than checking bags and waiting for them on arrival at your destination. It is such a waste of time, so plan ahead and plan smart. If I am going someplace cold I will also bring a hooded sweatshirt, which is a black Nike hoodie that I have on in many of my pictures. I also always have this on my body at airports because it can add w…

There Is No Joy In Juba

…whom would know what the best hotel in town was. Hotel is kind of a loose term even though they call it a resort on the sign. It is essentially a trailer park meets a Motel 6 type place along Route 66 somewhere in bum-fuck Arizona. I didn’t have a reservation as they are practically impossible to make online or even by phoning the hotel so I just showed up. They first started at like $250 and eventually I talked them into $150 which was a bargain…

Chobe National Park

…ere charged and elephant roared at several times. Elephant roared at is my term for the noise elephants make when they’re pissed off at you and the flail their ears out and mount a charge. These elephants are absolutely massive and wild and you never know what they’re going to do so it’s a little worrisome. But alas, they never do make contact with the car; it’s generally just a threat to let you know not to mess with them. Aside from thousands (l…

The Phoenix Open

…lf certainly comes first and people aren’t allowed to make noise-hence the term “golf clap”. The Phoenix Open is the best thing that Phoenix has to offer in my opinion and an event that when I eventually do leave Phoenix, I may still come to every year. Happy Gilmore would love it! As I said the most popular hole for spectators to watch is the 16th hole due to the “Amphitheatre” atmosphere of the hole (see picture above-unfortunately I forgot my c…

Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Mexico

…n Desert to chill out for a few days, well maybe chill out isn’t the right term, but it’s a fun place to be and hang out with some friends. As we are almost all graduating in April, it was pretty much our going away party trip. We didn’t do it but they have some awesome dunes for ATV’s and dirtbikes, etc. If I ever go back, I will definitely do that but if you’re in Arizona and feel like dipping into Mexico, check out Rocky Point. You’ll feel like…

Sardinia In Short

…e of those things where you just take it in stages and give yourself short term goals. It is very hot and there are plateau levels so you just aim for that. To be honest, I got up pretty fast, I’d say in about 15 minutes or so but I am sore today as I am writing this on the plane to London but well worth the great experience. Back toward Alghero and Capo Caccia there are some other really nice beaches so I stopped at Spiaggia Lazzarotte (below) wh…

The World’s Most Dangerous Road

…an amazing time. After an hour or so of bombing these hills (skateboarding term that perhaps only my friend Jake will understand) we reached an area where we had to pay a tourist tax of 25 B’s which is like $3 and more annoying than anything else and then they give you an optional 8km uphill ride at about 3500 meters at that point. 8km is about 5 miles and 3500 meters is some 12,000 feet and I’ve only been at altitude for 24 hours but of course I…
